Research Team Awarded Grant from Craig H. Neilsen Foundation

The Department of Neurosurgery is proud to announce that Dr. Naomi Sayre, Dr. Viktor Bartanusz, and Dr. Jim Lechleiter have been awarded a research grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting research that advances our understanding of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and develops new approaches to alleviate the dysfunction and complications patients encounter during SCI treatment.

Their research project aims to explore a potential treatment for traumatic SCI by targeting the energy production of astrocytes, a class of cells in the nervous system that plays a fundamental role in neural support and healing after injury. This work is made possible by a collaboration with Astrocyte Pharmaceuticals, who have provided their experimental drug, AST-004, for pre-clinical testing.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the realization of this research achievement!
