Program Highlights

What makes our program unique:

Experience Caring for High Acuity and Subspecialty Patients

  • Pediatric wards teams encompass patients on acute units as well as in the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (IMC), a step-down unit from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and helps provide care to high-acuity patients
  • Fellows gain more clinical experience with higher acuity patients including chronically ill, complex, and technology-dependent children, those requiring HFNC for respiratory support, and other children requiring significant support
  • Our primary practice site is a level I trauma center, burn center, and a liver and renal transplant center, and the general pediatric teams assist in co-managing these patients with surgical and medical subspecialists
  • The Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (PIRU) allows patients to regain strength and skills through intensive therapies while they remain admitted completing their medical treatment

Hospitalist-led Sedation Service

    • Pediatric Procedure Services helps provide a dedicated space with specially-trained nursing staff to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for children
    • Pediatric hospitalists perform anxiolysis and moderate sedation for children undergoing painful or prolonged procedures
    • Hospitalists undergo specialty training and participate in simulation events to safely manage emergencies and appropriately resuscitate patients
    • Fellows can also have the opportunity to work with anesthesiologists for more complex cases requiring airway management
    • We have been designated as a Center of Excellence by the Society for Pediatric Sedation

Flexible and Individualized Schedule

  • Fellows will have the opportunity to customize their schedule with the support of the PHM Fellowship Program Director, Associate Program Director, and Program Coordinator to help maintain a work-life balance while fulfilling all academic requirements in fellowship
  • New rotations/electives can be explored based on a fellow’s individual interests to help prepare them for their future in hospital medicine
  • Schedules can be easily adapted throughout the year as life plans change!

Collaborative Environment

  • UT Health San Antonio is proud to have a close-knit community which builds a strong foundation for a friendly, supportive, and encouraging environment
